Set in Cali, Colombia, Abyss follows an eight-year-old girl, Claudia, as she navigates roughly a year of her life, when it is disrupted suddenly and violently.
Quintana’s spare, atmospheric novel explores the terrors of the adult world. And there’s much for Claudia to fear: snakes, guerrillas, loneliness, crippling sadness. Even the house plants take on a ghostly presence. “I always thought of the plants as my mother’s dead,” Claudia says. “Her dead, reborn.”
The Living Room & Leeskabinet book club is organized for EUR-students by the Living Room and the Rotterdamsch Leeskabinet, the EUR humanities library. It is hosted by Berrie Vugts and Elsbeth van der Ploeg in the Living Room, now located in the Langeveld-building. Our book picks come from our Reading Without Borders collection, which you can find in the Leeskabinet.
