On Wednesday 9 October 2024, S.C. Husen will defend the doctoral thesis titled: ‘The Human Head and Brain in the Early Life Course: With emphasis on development and prenatal care‘.

Brief summary:

The development of the embryonic and fetal head and brain involves very complex processes that continue after birth. Periconception maternal health conditions, including genetic background, lifestyle, social circumstances and environmental exposures influence these processes. In this thesis we focus on the human embryonic and fetal head and brain development with emphasis on the impact of maternal folate status, IVF/ICSI treatment, and fetal growth restriction. Additionally, we focus on the postnatal follow-up of children at risk of neurodevelopmental impairment and the prenatal care of fetuses with an isolated small head.

We have tried to push the boundaries towards a more subtle and precise look at the developing head and brain of the embryo and fetus, and the results of this thesis provide more insight in the influence of different environmental maternal conditions, which can make a difference in (neuro)developmental outcome. Our results further contribute to a better understanding of human head and brain development and create more awareness of the importance of periconceptional and prenatal counseling to prevent risks and support a healthier lifestyle. Finally, it will be very helpful to be able to
prenatally better predict which children are at risk for abnormal neurodevelopment in later life, to support their prenatal development and as such provide the best starting position in life.
