On Tuesday 1 October 2024 D.L.A. Lescure will defend the doctoral thesis titled: Prescription of Antibiotics in Primary Care: Enhancing communication between general practitioners and immigrant patients

Below is a brief summary of the dissertation:

Antibiotics are often incorrectly prescribed by general practitioners, mainly for respiratory infections. Current interventions aimed at improving antibiotic prescribing behavior through doctor-patient interaction mainly target the general population. Within this PhD trajectory, research was therefore conducted into the use of antibiotics and the communication about this between GPs and patients, with a specific focus on patients with a migration background. The research showed that language barriers in particular have a negative influence on the diagnostic process in general practice, and therefore on the prescription of antibiotics. In addition, the study showed that communication training for general practitioners, aimed at improving communication with their patients with a migration background, is effective in improving the knowledge and skills of general practitioners, but not in reducing the number of antibiotics prescribed.
