Co-creating place brands

sharing research insights and practical experiences towards more inclusive cities and regions
View of the city of Rotterdam from above

The aim of this workshop is to bring together knowledge of academics and practitioners on city/region branding and governance, to discuss co-creation and inclusion of place brands among stakeholders. We will explore themes around participation and engagement of citizens and other stakeholders (such as business, local entrepreneurs, educational organizations, not for profit associations and other public, private and civil society actors) in city branding processes.

What do we focus on?

We focus in particular on ideas around who is included and excluded from such participation, reflecting on existing discussions in the academic literature around power relations, social inequalities and exclusion mechanisms in the brand process.

  • What are the determinants of stakeholder participation in decision-making in branding processes?
  • What motivates stakeholder participation?
  • What are the effects of such participation on support for branding projects and associated policies?’

This event is free of charge, with two sessions (morning and afternoon), open to academics, students and practitioners.

The aim of the workshop is twofold:

  1. to share research insights and practical experiences in city/region branding co-creation towards more inclusive cities and regions (thus bringing academics, practitioners and the local community together); and
  2. to connect scholars at DPAS, EUR and beyond interested in the topics of inclusive cities, co-creation and city branding with practitioners and organizations working in this space towards potential collaborations.
