What do you as a youth worker, general practitioner, study advisor, lecturer or student psychologist know about problems with emotion regulation and/or personality disorders in young adults? Do you know, for example, that periods of high stress and change can amount to the development of these problems? And that you can spot signs of problems in emotion regulation and personality disorders functioning around puberty and adolescence?
Contrary to popular belief, problems in emotion regulation and personality disorders are often visible early on (Chanen et al., 2007) These disorders are also more common than you might think: up to 14% of the Dutch population can be diagnosed with a personality. Unfortunately, strong negative stigmas and unfamiliarity with this issue have a negative influence on the problems to be assessed or dealt with. As a result, young adults do either not always receive the right help or not in a timely manner.
How can you better recognize problems in emotion regulation and personality functioning? And how can you help or refer young people who are struggling with this problem? Prof. dr. Karin Slotema and Juliana Cardona Cano MSc. answer these questions and more in the online masterclass "Emotion regulation and personality disorders in young adults".
Program
During the online masterclass, prof. dr. Karin Slotema and Juliana Cardona Cano MSc. address the knowledge, attitudes and skills needed to support, guide, or refer young adults with emotion regulation problems or with personality disorders. From a psychological perspective they will address:
- What the problems with emotion regulation and personality functioning are, in which ways they occur, what the causes and consequences are, and how they can be organized.
- Current stigmas about problems with emotion regulation and personality disorders, and how to get rid of them.
- How emotion regulation problems and personality disorders are treated.
- What you, within various roles (youth worker, study advisor, general practitioner, teacher, etc.) can do for young adults who struggle with these problems.
- And where, within the different roles, the boundaries are in what you can do for the young adults.
The masterclass is interactive. Next to knowledge being shared and possibility for questions and discussions some (short) exercises will be carried out. This way you can immediately start working in your own professional practice with the new knowledge, attitudes and skills.
For whom?
This online masterclass is relevant for everyone who works with young people/young adults, such as youth workers, study advisors, general practitioners, teachers or (student) psychologists. But also for supervisors and/or support staff of adults, and anyone who is just interested in problems with emotion regulation and/or problems in personality functioning, this online masterclass is a must!
Date, duration, form
This online masterclass (via Zoom) will be held on 26 October from 3.30 untill 5 pm. This online masterclass will be in English, but if there is a need providing a Dutch version is possible.
