Maren Wehrle publishes 'Phänomenologie: Eine Einführung'

Boeken op een plank in een bibliotheek

In 2022 Dr. Maren Wehrle, Assistant Professor in Practical Philosophy, published her new book Phänomenologie: Eine Einführung. She did so with J.B. Metzler (part of Springer). Continue for a synopsis of the book. An English translation will follow in 2024, at the latest.

This book offers a unique introduction to phenomenology because it focuses entirely on the method(s) of phenomenology, illustrating them with examples. It is intended for students, teachers and all people interested in phenomenology.

It aims to reflect and unify all past and present branches of phenomenology (classical, critical, post-, interdisciplinary or applied).

It is short, user-friendly and practical; with information and definition frameworks, as well as practical exercises. No jargon, no personal cult, just phenomenology in action - back to things themselves!

The question behind this book is as follows: what do we do when we do phenomenology? This has been guiding in the writing since 2017, when Wehrle was asked to represent phenomenology in this series of philosophy's methods.

The central thesis is that all phenomenologies and phenomenologists, whether traditional, post-, critical, political, interdisciplinary or applied, (should) engage in, and strive for, one or all of the three activities below:

  1. Describing (what appears) without preconceptions/assumptions
  2. Searching for general structures (structure or eidos)
  3. Reclaiming conditions (historical or transcendental)
