We know that moving to a new country comes with many challenges. Here, you'll find a glossary of housing-related terms to make your search a little easier. Please note that most of the websites and listings you’ll find are in Dutch, but with this guide, we hope you will better understand housing advertisements. 

We listed frequently used housing terms in alphabetical order:

  • achternaam = surname
  • appartement = flat, apartment
  • badkamer = bathroom
  • balkon = balcony
  • bericht = message
  • bericht versturen = send message
  • bus = bus
  • contact = contact
  • dichtbij = near to
  • gedeeld = shared
  • gedeelde keuken en badkamer = shared kitchen and bathroom
  • gedeeltelijk gemeubileerd = partly furnished
  • gemeubileerd = fully furnished
  • helder = clear, bright
  • huurtoeslag = rent benefit
  • inclusief gas, water, licht = electricity, gas, water included
  • jongen = boy
  • kamer = room
  • keuken = kitchen
  • man = man
  • meisje = girl
  • metro = underground
  • naam = name
  • onderwerp = subject (matter)
  • rustig = quiet
  • studentenhuis = shared student accommodation
  • studio = bedsit, studio flat
  • tram = tram
  • tweekamerappartement = a two-room apartment (living room and bedroom)
  • voor niet-roker = non-smoker wanted
  • vrouw = woman
  • woonkamer = living room
