PART 1: The Divided States of America (21:00 – 23:00 uur).
This year’s elections in the United States will be exciting, to say the least. Joe Biden had to withdraw, what are the chances of the Democrats with Kamala Harris? Can Donald Trump, who survived a recent assassination attempt, but is convicted of fraud (among other things), still become president? Are these the best candidates to lead the most powerful country in the world? What are the consequences of this election? What do ‘ordinary’ Americans think about the path the country should take, and what will the outcome mean for Europe?
The run-up to the election is heady with conspiracy theories about Taylor Swift’s influence and plenty of memes going viral. How will America choose, and what will the result mean for domestic politics? What is the big Project 2025 from Trump’s ranks, and what will remain of democracy? Or will the Democrats get the chance to extend and bet on the Green New Deal and securing abortion rights?
We will talk about this with several experts. Including Danny Ghosen on his conversations with ordinary Americans; journalist Süeda Işık on meme culture; America expert Kirsten Verdel on the domestic politics; Jaap van Slageren on populism and democracy and prof. Michal Onderco on what the outcome of the election will mean for Europe.
- Danny Ghosen is a journalist, and tv host. He made, among other things, Danny’s Wereld, Danny in Arabistan en Danny & The Americans (VPRO). In his programs, he looks for the frayed edges of society and portrays people who usually have no voice.
- Journalist Süeda Işık knows all about memes and meme culture. She writes about it for Dutch daily newspaper NRC.
- Kirsten Verdel is an America expert. As a freelance journalist and political analyst, she writes for De Volkskrant and the FD, among others. She was the only foreigner working in Washington on Barack Obama's campaign team in 2008.
- Prof. dr. Michal Onderco is Full Professor of International Relations in the Department of Public Administration and Sociology at Erasmus University Rotterdam. He is an expert on foreign and security policy in Europe and beyond.
- Dr. Jaap van Slageren is universitair docent Human Geography en Spatial Planning. Zijn onderzoek focust op en stemgedrag, vooral met betrekking tot economische en culturele factoren van populistisch radicaal rechts en populisme.
