About the Joint Japan World Bank Graduate Scholarships
In 1987, the World Bank, with funding from the Government of Japan, established the World Bank Graduate Scholarship Program for graduate studies in subjects related to economic development. Each year, the Program awards scholarships to individuals from World Bank member countries to undertake graduate studies at renowned universities throughout member countries of the Bank.
- You are a Japanese national or you are a citizen from one of the developing countries;
- You do not hold a dual citizenship of a developed country;
- You are under the age of 45 on the application deadline date;
- You hold a bachelor degree (or its equivalent university degree) earned at least three years prior to the application deadline;
- You are in good health;
- You have at least 3 years of full-time paid development-related experience since earning a bachelor’s degree (or equivalent university degree). This development-related experience was gained within the past six years from the date of the application deadline;
- You are not employed by the government of Japan or its related agencies, including local governments and the Central Bank at the time of application;
- You are not an executive director, his/her alternate, and/or staff of all types of appointments of the World Bank Group, or a close relative of the aforementioned by blood or adoption with the term "close relative" defined as: mother, father, sister, half-sister, brother, half-brother, son, daughter, aunt, uncle, niece, or nephew;
- You have not received any scholarship funds from the government of Japan to help finance a graduate degree;
- You are accepted or currently enrolled into a graduate programme focused on poverty alleviation and shared prosperity in developing countries.

Applicable to:
- Nationalities: Japanese, Citizens from developing countries
- Partcipating faculties: Institute for Housing and Urban Management (IHS) and International Institute for Social Studies (ISS)
- Level of study: Master
- Economy class air travel between your home country and the host university at the start of your study program and immediately following the end of the scholarship period. In addition to the two-way air travel, scholars will receive a US $ 500 travel allowance for each trip.
- Tuition for your graduate program and the cost of basic medical insurance usually obtained through the university.
- A monthly subsistence allowance to cover living expenses, including books. The amount of the allowance varies depending on the host country.
