dr. M (Mijke) Slot

Biography

Mijke Slot is assistant professor of Media and Communication at the Erasmus School of History, Culture and Communication at Erasmus University Rotterdam.

Her research expertise lies in the impact of technology on user/producer relations, user engagement, serious games, and innovation in journalism.

In 2009, Mijke supported the Temporary Committee for the Innovation and Future of the Press to advise former Minister Plasterk of the Ministry of Education, Culture and Science on how to deal with technological challenges provided to Dutch news media. Later, in collaboration with various stakeholders, she researched the innovative potential and practices of news companies and consumption practices of news consumers. She studied the changing news sector in Europe for the Institute of Prospective Technological Studies, and advised the Dutch Ministry of Education, Culture and Science on the future of Dutch news agencies, who were struggling with the decreasing value of their services due to digitization and online competition. Currently, Mijke is working on a research project about the digital relationship between journalists and their audiences, which is partly funded by the Dutch Journalism Fund (Stimuleringsfonds voor de Journalistiek).

Mijke studied Arts and Culture Studies (BA) and Media and Journalism (MA) at Erasmus University Rotterdam, the Netherlands. She graduated Cum Laude on a study on the performance of Dutch game developers in the international game industry. After her graduation, she worked as a junior researcher for the NWO funded research project Cultural Classification Systems in Transition. In 2013 she defended her dissertation The extended media consumer at the faculty of Philosophy (Erasmus University Rotterdam). In her dissertation she explored changes in the relationship between media audiences and media producers online. She explored the impact of technologies on specific user activities in more depth during an externally financed research project on the motivations of teenagers to engage in creative activities.

Mijke’s work is published in international journals (Journal of Children and Media, The International Journal of Web Based Communities, Observatorio, Telematics & Informatics, Journalism), she has been author and editor of several publications on journalism in a changing landscape and in 2009 she won the Best Young Researcher Award at the COST Conference The Good, The Bad and The Challenging, in Copenhagen. In 2015, Mijke was awarded the teaching prize of Erasmus University Rotterdam. Together with her colleague Prof. dr. Jeroen Jansz, Mijke developed a MOOC (Massive Online Open Course) on Serious Games, which was launched in 2016.
