Unrest in Rotterdam about 'De Hef'

De Hefbrug (1932)

Most Rotterdammers have noticed: The news that the iconic bridge 'De Hef' is to be dismantled to make room for multimillionaire Jeff Bezos' yacht. This caused unrest in the port city.

From protest actions on Facebook to countless memes: the temporary removal of a part of the much-loved bridge causes quite a stir among 'ordinary Rotterdam people'. Two EUR scientists explain in AD / Rotterdams Dagblad why the people of Rotterdam are so angry.

Prof. Paul van de Laar, city historian, Erasmus School of History, Culture and Communication: "Sometimes I ask myself whether we are still in control of our city. When it comes to money, everything seems possible."

Dr Petra de Jong, behavioural scientist Erasmus School of Social and Behavioural Sciences: "Rotterdammers are extremely proud of the iconic places in the city. Especially the objects that survived the bombing of May 1940. If you touch these, you touch them."
