On 30 December, Peter Kavelaars, Professor of Economics of Taxation at Erasmus School of Economics, was heard on BNR Nieuwsradio. Kavelaars gave his reaction to an interview published by de Volkskrant with Klaas Knot, president of De Nederlandsche Bank.
In this interview, Knot says that our tax system is in need of radical reform. The DNB president points to to the many deductions, exemptions and rebates, combined with the fact that millions of Dutch people receive a supplement.
According to Kavelaars, Knot has ‘a definite point’ with his call. However, the solution is not easy to find, as ‘a complicated and complex society always has a complex tax system’, he points out. However, it is possible to clean up all kinds of schemes says Kavelaars. In fact, many of these schemes are not effective at all and have not been used as they were intended for years. However, politicians want to keep supporters happy, so abolishing facilities proves difficult.
