Sucessful PhD defence by Binyam Afewerk Demena

'Essays on Intra-Industry Spillovers from FDI in Developing Countries - A Firm-Level Analysis with a Focus on Sub-Saharan Africa'

On Friday 16 June, Binyam Afewerk Demena successfully defended his PhD thesis on 'Essays on Intra-Industry Spillovers from FDI in Developing Countries - A Firm-Level Analysis with a Focus on Sub-Saharan Africa' in which he investigates the spillover effects of Foreign Direct Investment (FDI) in developing countries.

He finds that spillover effects travel through three different channels, each of which need to be investigated to provide a full and clear picture of the overall effects. In his analysis he finds that much of the current literature uses much too narrow framework, focussing on only one aspect of the spillover effect. He furthermore finds that, despite expectations to the contrary, actual spillover effects in terms of benefits from transferred knowledge are disappointing.
