For many, the appointment of Marc Overmars as technical director at Belgian side Royal Antwerp FC is a slap in the face. To the clock, it has only been six weeks since he left Ajax through the back door. Sports philosopher Sandra Meeuwsen comments on this event in Dutch newspaper Het Parool. "You cannot cancel someone. But it would have been honourable to Overmars if he had stayed under the radar longer."
The Antwerp football club presented the former Ajax director at a press conference on Monday. Asked about his resignation due to sexual transgression, he assured that it will not happen again.
Timing issues
Sandra Meeuwsen is troubled by the timing of the appointment. "You can't cancel someone. But it would have suited Overmars if he had stayed under the radar longer and gone through the car wash. He and Antwerp now radiate something like: we just continue on the old foot."
According to the sports philosopher, it does not benefit Overmars' reputation. "He could also have chosen to work for a more modest club at a later stage. At Antwerp the big money rules."
