Finance Professor Sebastian Gryglewicz of Erasmus School of Economics is the highest newcomer to the 2021 ESB economists top 40. Every year in December, ‘Economisch Statistische Berichten’ (ESB) publishes a ranking of the Dutch economists who have published the best in the past five years in international scientific journals.
Sebastian Gryglewicz has taken 24th place and is the highest new entrant to the 2021 economists top 40. According to ESB he owes this place to three publications in top journals in 2020, including one in Management Science. In that publication, he argues that simply linking managers' compensation to the right performance goals is not enough to ensure that managers will also try to deliver this performance. For the manager, it is not the link between reward and performance that is important, but between reward and effort to be made. If the work is too hard, it won't work.
Erasmus School of Economics with 8 scientists in the individual ranking
This year, 8 scholars of Erasmus School of Economics can be found in the individual ranking of the best 40 economists. The highest ranked economist is Professor of Corporate Finance Patrick Verwijmeren, who came in 3rd. He is closely followed by his colleague Peter Wakker, who can be found in 9th place. Aurélien Baillon (14th), Olivier Marie (18th), Han Bleichrodt (21st), Sjoerd van Bekkum (23rd) and Jan van Ours (40th) complete the list.
Rotterdam further extends its lead
In total, 15 of the 40 best publishing economists are affiliated with Erasmus University Rotterdam. That is more than number 2, the VU (8), while number 3, Tilburg University and the University of Amsterdam each are represented in the list by 6 economists. Erasmus University Rotterdam is thus expanding its first place in the ESB institute ranking.
