How ubiquitous are clean water and fresh air? How many women are in leadership roles? How sophisticated are the last mile logistics? How safe are members of the LGBTQ+ community? What is the unemployment rate among immigrants? How free is the freedom of religion? What is the drop-out rate in the secondary school system? How big is the difference between the number of healthy life years enjoyed by the rich and the poor?
During an online gathering under leadership of Vice Dean of Research, Prof. Enrico Pennings, the SDG project teams of Erasmus School of Economics presented their research progress to an audience of more than 60 colleagues on Wednesday 30 June 2021.
Contributing through measurement and actions
Jan Peter Balkenende, Professor of Governance, Institutions and Internationalisation at Erasmus School of Economics, gave an inspiring speech. He also participated in the first meeting and provided an outside-in perspective on the developments in the School. He suggested two ways for economists to contribute to the SDGs: through measurement and actions. He stressed how those two elements relate to values and to what we consider valuable. His speech provided an encouraging background to position the work of the other presenters.
School invests 5 million euro in multiple research projects
In 2018 former Dean of Erasmus School of Economics Prof. Philip Hans Franses announced that the school would invest 5 million euros in the following five years, to set up multiple research projects that address one or more of the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). In June 2019, a first meeting was organised to bring together all SDG research project members and present their respective projects.
The SDG projects once again confirmed that a transition is taking place in this respect and the SDGs themselves emphasise its importance and its urgency. The second SDG event showed the opportunities that exist for Erasmus School of Economics in relation to the global SDG journey.
