'Rural youth and urban-based vocational training: gender, space and aspiring to "become someone"'

Article by ISS alumna Lyda Chea and senior lecturer Roy Huijsmans in Children's Georgraphies: 1-14, 2017.

Bringing together their respective research in Cambodia and Laos, the authors analyse how informal and privately organized training spaces are situated in rural youth's gendered lives and shape aspirations of 'becoming someone'.

Their comparison of informal apprenticeships with classroom-based training leads them to raise some important questions about the implications of the (global) policy emphasis on the standardization and formalization of Technical and Vocational Education and Training.
