As of 1 October 2024, Dr Ronald Huisman has been appointed as Professor of Sustainable Energy Finance (0.2 FTE) at Erasmus School of Economics. In his research, Huisman focuses on how financial institutions can help to speed-up the energy transition, which is needed to mitigate the effects from climate risk.

Rethinking business models

Sustainable energy finance is a field that grows and adapts to changes that will happen in the (renewable) energy markets. As investments in renewable energy assets, storage capacity, and demand response will increase, power prices will decrease and become less volatile. This lowers the value of renewable energy assets and the profitability of battery owners. Consequently, the energy sector needs to rethink their business models.

As a professor of Sustainable Energy Finance, Ronald Huisman will continue to study energy prices, risk premiums, and valuation (of business models) applied to energy assets that make power systems more flexible. Furthermore, he will focus on the role of impact investors, the measurement of impact, and the trade-off between risk, return, and impact.

‘Important player in the energy transition debate’

Patrick Groenen, Dean of Erasmus School of Economics is pleased with the appointment: ‘Ronald not only plays a crucial role in understanding and facilitating the energy transition from an economic perspective, but his work also helps navigate the complex challenges associated with the transition to a sustainable energy supply, with a particular focus on the functioning of energy markets, risk management, and policymaking. His influence extends to both academia and practical policy implementation, making him and our School an important player in the energy transition debate.’
