The renovation of Tinbergen Building, the iconic building on Erasmus University Rotterdam's Woudestein campus, has started and is being carried out by Berghege Heerkens bouwgroep. Completion of the renovated building is scheduled for mid-2027.
The project was awarded to contractor Berghege Heerkens bouwgroep on July 11, 2024 after a formal tender process. "I am happy and proud that the renovation of Tinbergen Building can finally start. It is a milestone in the further modernization and sustainability of our campus. In the coming years, Berghege Heerkens bouwgroep will be hard at work, so that students and employees can benefit from the improved educational and research facilities in the decades to come," said Ellen van Schoten, vice president of the Executive Board.

"We are delighted to have been selected for this prestigious project. The Berghege Heerkens bouwgroep combines years of experience in the construction industry with a vast knowledge of sustainable renovations. In addition, we understand like no other the unique needs of the education market, which enables us to create an environment that is not only modern but also functional. During our work, we keep inconvenience to a minimum; both for the students and employees and for the flora and fauna in the area," states director Dennis Krol, on behalf of the Berghege Heerkens bouwgroep.
A much-needed renovation
The renovation of Tinbergen Building - a 1968 municipal monument - is much needed. The technical installations are past their useful life and no longer comply with legislation. Also, the layout of the building no longer meets the modern requirements for education and research, as it currently consists largely of smaller office spaces, while there is a need for spaces that can be used flexibly.
The renovation is part of EUR's strategy to improve the quality of education and research. The building will offer modern study areas and teaching rooms. Outdated facilities will be replaced with new, high-quality study and work spaces with the latest audiovisual equipment and a stimulating environment with many plants and trees, both indoors and outdoors, for a healthy working environment.
In addition, there will be a glass structure on top of the building with rooms and a restaurant with views of the Rotterdam skyline for everyone within the university to use. This addition addresses the need for spaces on campus suitable for executive programs, workshops and master classes. With the construction, these spaces no longer need to be rented elsewhere in the city.
Sustainability as an important pillar
Erasmus University Rotterdam has an ambitious sustainability program. The renovation of Tinbergen Building also contributes to this. The renovated building, for example, will feature improved roof and floor insulation, energy-efficient elevator systems and solar panels on the roof. It has also been agreed with the contractor that materials removed during the renovation will be reused as much as possible.
It is now planned that the office floors of Tinbergen Building can be occupied in September 2027, including by Erasmus School of Economics, and teaching can begin at the start of academic year 2027-2028.
