Erasmus University Rotterdam (EUR) celebrated its 110th anniversary during the Dies Natalis event on November 8, 2023. At this event, Professor Jun Borras was appointed as the third Erasmus Professor. The Erasmus Professorship is a prestigious position designated by the Executive Board of Erasmus University. It is awarded to distinguished scientists who are dedicated to research that creates real-world impact and aligns with the university's strategic goals and core values. Professor Borras will hold this position for a five-year term.
Expanding scholar-activism
Professor Jun Borras is professor of Agrarian Studies at the International Institute of Social Studies (ISS). His research primarily focuses on topics such as land and food politics, climate change, international agrarian movements, and global transformation. He has a specific interest in geographical areas like Southeast Asia, China, Africa, and South America.
Professor Borras is also a recipient of the European Research Council (ERC) Advanced Grant for his ongoing research project, 'Commodity & land rushes and regimes'. Furthermore, he holds the title of Distinguished Professor at China Agricultural University, Beijing, and serves as an associate at the Netherlands-based Transnational Institute (TNI).
In his new role as Erasmus Professor, Professor Borras intends to strengthen and expand his academic work, pushing the boundaries of scholar-activism within the interdisciplinary field of Critical Agrarian Studies. His research, educational efforts, and engagement activities will acquire new relevance in the dynamic, international environment of EUR, especially in the context of broader development studies.
