Starting 16 January, a pilot with reusable cups launches on campus. The pilot, which will last three months, is an initiative of Erasmus University Rotterdam in cooperation with Packback, a Startup from Rotterdam. The aim is to investigate how to reduce the amount of waste from the EUR.
Important step towards more sustainable campus
At Erasmus University we consume about two million hot drinks every year, which are now mainly packaged in disposable cups. This generates an enormous amount of waste and CO2 emissions. That calls for improvement!
This pilot is an important step by the Real Estate & Facilities department to explore how EUR can apply sustainable reusable packaging campus-wide. By doing so, we can reduce our CO2 footprint and produce much less waste. This pilot alone is expected to save about 100,000 disposable cups!

When you order a hot beverage from one of the participating outlets during the pilot, you will receive it in a sturdy reusable cup by default. When ordering, you'll be asked to show the code in your Packback app. After use, you scan the cup with your app and drop it into a "SmartBin". The bin recognizes your cup, so you don't have to pay a deposit if you hand it in on time.
PackBack cleans and inspects the cups so they are ready for their new life. So you can enjoy your coffee and tea waste-free. All taste, zero waste!

Returning the cup
After you receive the cup, you have 4 days to return it. It's important to do this on time, because otherwise a deposit will be charged. You can easily drop the cup in one of the 8 purple Smartbins that are spread across campus. Find the Smartbin locations on the map below.
