Last Sunday, the Erasmus Charity Run participants raised €21,203. This broke last year's record. Participants ran the full or the 1/4 marathon. During this running event, official part of the Rotterdam Marathon, participants raise money to provide talented students with financial support.
Despite the low temperature and drizzling rain, the participants gathered at the stairs of Erasmus University College. Here, they picked up their t-shirts and joined a short warming up. After that, students, employees, alumni and friends of our university started their races.
Financial support
Like every year, participants raise money to support talented students. Leading up to the race, students like Chau and Mariia shared their story as recipients of a scholarship. For the runners, stories like these make their effort really concrete. “A lot of talented people come from disadvantaged backgrounds”, says Wayne Muchadehama, participant of the Erasmus Charity Run. “They can’t afford and access quality education, and scholarships help facilitate that."
Record amount
The race started as an initiative by Erasmus School of Economics in 2013 and exists as a collaboration between Erasmus University Rotterdam and Erasmus Trustfonds since 2016. The existing record for highest raised amount was broken, with a total amount of € 21.203. The CvB will match fund this amount, which brings the total amount to € 41.203.
With these funds we will be able to help three scholarship students in the upcoming academic year. The amount of €41.203 will be handed over to Erasmus Trustfonds. Kim Elferink, responsible for organizing the race, looks back on a wonderful Sunday. “We are very proud of all our runners and donors. They have helped make dreams come true. And the atmosphere was amazing!"
