NWA grant for research on sexually transgressive behaviour and sexual violence

The Dutch Research Council (NWO) has awarded a grant of €2,858,000 from the Dutch Research Agenda (NWA) to a transdisciplinary research project on sexually transgressive behaviour and sexual violence (STBSV). The T@CKLE project, led by pedagogical scientist and sociologist Professor dr. Daphne van de Bongardt, Erasmus University Rotterdam, comprises a comprehensive consortium of knowledge institutions and societal partners. In addition to scientific research and developing practice-oriented tools, a new national STBSV network will be founded to unite stakeholders.

T@CKLE (Transdisciplinary Analysis and Co-creation of Knowledge to Lead Efforts against Online and Offline Sexually Transgressive Behaviour and Sexual Violence) thoroughly tackles both online and offline STBSV. With an integrated and transdisciplinary approach T@CKLE brings together experts, organizations and initiatives in a new national STBSV network. With this, the collaboration across disciplines is consolidated and the strengths of existing initiatives are combined. The project’s approach is fivefold, aiming at different socio-ecological levels, both individuals and social contexts:

1) More effective prevention of transgressive behaviour by perpetrators,
2) More tailored support for victims,
3) More structural professional approach within organizations,
4) Tackling harmful narratives such as victim blaming and reducing social acceptance of STBSV,
5) Securing an integrated approach for the long term.

Scientific knowledge will be translated into practice in close collaboration with relevant stakeholders: with practical toolkits and education for professionals and the general public. Targeted campaigns will be used to set societal change in motion. By reducing the prevalence and negative consequences of STBSV, T@CKLE strives to drive sustainable progress towards a safe society regarding sexuality.

About the T@CKLE consortium

The transdisciplinary T@CKLE consortium is led by Professor Dr. Daphne van de Bongardt, full professor of 'Relational and sexual development, education and health' at Erasmus University Rotterdam (EUR). The consortium includes several knowledge institutions as co-applicants: EUR, University Medical Center Utrecht, University of Groningen, Utrecht University, Leiden University, Rutgers and TNO, and several societal cooperation partners: ARQ center'45, Emancipator, Fairspace, Municipality of Rotterdam, National Center for Sexual Violence, Movisie, Offlimits, Parnassia Group, Soa Aids Netherlands, Trimbos Institute, Verwey Jonker Institute, and Windesheim University of Applied Sciences. Several other parties are also involved in a broad advisory board. The grant amounts to €2,858,000. The project will start in the Fall of 2025 and run for five years.
Van de Bongardt: "It is incredibly important that this grant for this important theme came from the Dutch Research Agenda, which was developed for and by society. Because this theme affects us all. We are grateful and deeply proud that we have received this grant and recognition for this ambitious plan in this great partnership. STBSV is a truly wicked problem, and a sustainable solution can only be achieved with joint effort."

About the NWA program STBSV

The NWA program 'Sexually Transgressive Behavior and Sexual Violence: Towards an Effective and Preventive Approach' aims to pool existing knowledge and develop new knowledge on what effectively contributes to preventing (on- and offline) sexually transgressive behaviour and sexual violence as much as possible. An effective approach includes (preventive) interventions for sexually transgressive behaviour and sexual violence. These interventions are aimed at doing justice to victims as much as possible, preventing sexually transgressive behaviour and sexual violence, and preventing recidivism by perpetrators. NWA called on knowledge institutions and social parties to jointly develop scientific and practice-oriented research proposals around sexually transgressive behaviour and sexual violence. ZonMw is implementing this program in collaboration with NWO.
