"Nightlife offers groups of people a place they can't find during the day"

Nightlife has been closed for almost two years now. "In the night a lot of things happen that get no attention during the daytime programme", says music sociologist Julian Schaap in an interview with EenVandaag. According to him, life after midnight is important because it offers people the possibility to step out of the daily routine and to express their identity.

"Nightlife offers groups of people a place they cannot find during the day", Schaap says. Going out is also important for finding friendships and love. 'Music connects' is a common expression. According to Schaap, people have a natural tendency to synchronise with each other to music. This creates a connection.

Nightclubs across the country want to reopen on February 12th. For this, a protest has been organised.
