In September 2018, the Arts and Culture Studies department of Erasmus University Rotterdam will offer a new master's programme: Tourism, Culture and Society. In this specialization of the Master in Arts and Culture Studies, students will gain thorough knowledge of the complex interplay between tourism, culture and society.
How can we make sense of New Zealand's 50% increase in tourism after the release of the Lord of the Rings trilogy? What motivates over 1.5 million people each year to visit Auschwitz in Poland? And why are the majority of Air France's destinations former colonies of France? These are some of the questions that students can explore in the Master's programme Tourism, Culture and Society.
In this new master's programme, students get a bigger picture of the field, as they learn to understand the relations between tourism and international economies, media and cultures.
Target audience
The programme is meant for students who want to become creative and critical professionals in the ever-growing tourist industry, or for those who want to pursue an academic career in the field of cultural studies, media studies and/or tourism studies.
