On 12 June 2019 EUR and Shanghai Jiao Tong University renewed their MoU, attended by both presidents, Ms. Kristel Baele and Professor JIANG Sixian, the Mayor of Rotterdam Mr. Aboutaleb and the EUR delegation. Before the signing ceremony, both presidents had the opportunity to meet each other and exchange gifts.
Besides the extension of MoU, Erasmus School of Law signed an agreement with KoGuan Law School of Shanghai Jiaotong University and another agreement with School of Law of Shanghai Maritime University; Erasmus School of Law is also a part of Law School Alliance (Asia-Pacific and Europe).
Shanghai and Rotterdam have had a long and good relationship for 40 years now. Academic cooperation between the EUR and Shanghai Jiao Tong University was both fostered by the Sister City relationship and helped strengthen it over the past years. This academic cooperation was formalized through the signing of a MoU in 2008. This year the 40 year relationship between two cities is celebrated and it is an honour to be able to renew the MoU during this anniversary.
The Erasmus University China Centre has always played an important role and advised, coordinated and facilitated the Erasmus University Executive Board regarding their Chinese partner universities for more than 20 years.
At this moment the two universities have five schools or institutes working together:
- Antai College of Economics & Management with Rotterdam School of Management
- Shanghai Advanced Institute of Finance with Rotterdam School of Management
- School of Medicine with Erasmus Medical Centre
- School of Law with Erasmus School of Law
- School of International and Public Affairs with Institute of Housing and Urban Studies
During the MoU signing ceremony, the presidents from both sides, the Mayor of Rotterdam and high officials from Shanghai gave speeches and wished the cooperation between both universities to be even more fruitful and successful in the future.
After that, both Law Schools of Shanghai Jiao Tong University and Erasmus University Rotterdam co-organized an international conference on a topic of “International Commercial and Investment Dispute Settlement: Mediation, Arbitration and Litigation”.
Furthermore, Prof. Severens, Dean of Erasmus School of Health Policy and Management (ESHPM) gave a seminar about “Health Technology Assessment (HTA)” and Prof. Kees Ahaus, Research Group Leader HSMO of ESHPM, introduced Dutch healthcare system and Health Care Management (HCM) to the professors from Shanghai Jiaotong University.
The academic cooperation is the key to further advancement of research and education, and that in the near future education and research will evolve around open and sustainable partnerships in mainly international networks. However, academic cooperation can only be successful when it will be developed “bottom-up” between talented scientists in their specific field of expertise. Erasmus University Rotterdam encourages its staff to establish contacts in order to create additional value for joint education, research and PhD programs.
