It is with sadness that Erasmus School of Economics has learned of the death of Emeritus Professor Wim Lammerts van Bueren on 1 January 2023. From 1999 he held the chair of International University Cooperation, in particular in the field of economics, at Erasmus School of Economics.
In the early 1990s, statistician Wim Lammerts van Bueren played an important role in the in the implementation of applied computer science in educational programmes, among others in the position as Dean of the executive programme Master of Business Information between 1993 and 1998.
Lammerts van Bueren continued his university career as Director of International Relations. This position was linked to his appointment as Professor of International University Cooperation, with a focus on the field of economics.
As Director of International Relations, he fulfilled an important role in the sister city relationship between Rotterdam and Shanghai. Commissioned by the Executive Board of Erasmus University Rotterdam, Wim set up the China-Holland Education Centre. His efforts led to more than a hundred Chinese students obtaining their PhDs in Rotterdam.
Wim Lammerts van Bueren's lifelong passion for statistics is also evident from the courses he gave to seniors as part of Higher Education for the Elderly (in Dutch: HOVO). Until long after his retirement, Wim was often to be found on Woudestein campus. On behalf of our School, he acted numerous times as a deputy rector during the defense of theses.
Our condolences go out to his partner, (grand) children and other relatives. On behalf of the Management Team of Erasmus School of Economics,
Prof. Patrick Groenen
Dean
