The University Library, in collaboration with the Community for Teaching and Innovation, has launched new e-modules to help students navigate the ethical use of Generative AI in their academic work.
With the rapid adoption of AI tools like ChatGPT since November 2022, it has become essential for students to understand both the potential benefits and the limitations of these technologies.
Why we need GenAI e-modules
As GenAI tools become an integral part of both academic and professional settings, it’s crucial for students to have a strong grasp of how to use these tools appropriately. Misuse of GenAI not only risks academic integrity violations but can also lead to misunderstandings about what constitutes proper research and writing practices within the university. Since each faculty at the university has its own or is developing policies or guidelines on GenAI use, these e-modules provide a general guidelines and ethical considerations. They are intended to reduce confusion and equip students with the basic knowledge they need to make informed decisions about using GenAI in their academic work.
How these modules benefit students
The e-modules are designed to meet the needs of students across various levels of study. By taking these e-modules, students will gain:
- clear guidelines;
- practical applications;
- ethical awareness.
The modules are not intended to cover the specific rules and guidelines for every faculty or class, but they provide a strong starting point for understanding the boundaries of responsible GenAI use.
Tailored modules for different student needs
Two separate e-modules have been developed to cater to different academic levels:
BA and MA Students: the first module is aimed at undergraduate and master’s students, offering a foundational introduction to GenAI, along with practical guidance on appropriate use cases. This module is ideal for students who may be new to these tools and need a solid framework to navigate GenAI responsibly.
PhD Candidates: the second module is tailored to PhD candidates, who have more advanced research needs. This module delves deeper into the ethical considerations and advanced applications of GenAI, equipping PhD students with the knowledge to integrate AI tools into their research in ways that align with academic integrity standards.
These e-modules have been carefully reviewed and approved by the EUR Task Force on AI and Academic Affairs, ensuring that they meet university standards and reflect the latest in ethical and responsible GenAI use.
The University Library encourages all students to explore these new resources, which will help them develop a thoughtful approach to integrating GenAI into their academic journey.
