Erasmus University Rotterdam was extremely shocked by the events in Paris. As the Executive Board of the University, we would like to express our horror at this barbarian act and our sympathy with the victims.
Desiderius Erasmus, from whom we take our name, wrote that: “In a free state, tongues too should be free….” An attack on the freedom of expression is also an attack on academic freedom. Consequently, like other universities, Erasmus University champions the right of freedom of speech. Universities must be places where people are free to express their own opinions. We wish, therefore, to express our solidarity with: Je suis Charlie.
