Researchers at Erasmus University have been working in interdisciplinary and transdisciplinary ways for years in an effort to address complex societal issues. However, changing academic and political landscapes make collaborative research less self-evident than it has been over recent years. To explore the growing challenges faced by researchers, the four Erasmus Initiatives are organising an event for all researchers, students and stakeholders interested in the future of collaborative and engaged research.
Artificial intelligence, good health and healthcare, quality city life and sustainable prosperity are some of the most important and complex topics facing modern society. Not coincidentally, those are also the issues the four Erasmus Initiatives have been focusing on since their founding in 2017, with AIPact starting as recently as 2022.
Event Details
We are currently at a critical moment where Erasmus University is at a crossroads in its commitment to fostering interdisciplinary and transdisciplinary collaboration, as well as supporting sustainable projects that positively impact communities. In an effort to try to understand the problems and opportunities the current landscape holds, the Erasmus Initiatives are organising an event on Thursday 13 March, from 12:00 to 18:00 in the Erasmus Pavilion.
After a welcome speech and a shared lunch, attendees can join one of the three sessions, where researchers from the different initiatives will share their experiences and have interactive discussions with attendees. The interactive sessions will be about: :
- Organising sustainable impact
- The day-to-day challenges of interdisciplinary research
- Stakeholder engagement.
After a break, all attendees and speakers will come together for a plenary session, to talk lessons learned and ideas moving forward.
A Special Perspective: Stakeholders as Rapporteurs
Jiska Engelbert of Vital Cities and Citizens will be hosting the day and moderating the session on organising impact. She explains what makes this event so important.
“The event aims to provide a platform for all colleagues and students at EUR who are reflecting on and committed to sustainable forms of interdisciplinarity and collaboration with partners beyond the university,” she explains. “What should we hold on to? What truly needs to change?”
One unique aspect of this event is the presence of a specially appointed delegation of rapporteurs—partners and stakeholders from Rotterdam who experience the effects of the university’s impact ambitions daily.
“How do they view our efforts? And what, in their eyes, really needs to change?”
