Researchers of Erasmus School of Economics successfully co-organised the 16th Tinbergen Institute Annual Conference: Morals, Purpose and Impact in Markets and Organisations, on 24 and 25 April 2025. The goal of the conference was to bring together economists conducting cutting-edge research on how organisations contribute to society beyond generating profits.
The conference brought together speakers from universities and institutions across the world, including Bocconi University, London School of Economics, and University of California. The organising committee consisted of Anne Boring, Dana Sisak, and Arjan Non of Erasmus School of Economics, Theo Offerman of University of Amsterdam, and Christina Rott and Andreas Ziegler of VU Amsterdam.
From profit maximisation to societal impact goals
The event focused on the evolving role of organisations, which increasingly extends beyond profit maximisation to broader societal goals. At the same time, it explored how competitive market environments shape individuals' morals and sense of purpose. Against the backdrop of challenges such as climate change, labour market inequality, and global tensions, these issues are more pressing than ever. Topics included how organisations use purpose and societal impact motives to create value for employees, consumers, and shareholders, and how markets influence people’s morals and sense of purpose.
The power of values and a sense of meaning
Presentations highlighted how firms differ in their workplace cultures and values, and how employees — particularly more educated workers — tend to seek organisations that align with their personal beliefs. Research showed that shared values can be powerful motivators, while concerns such as worker treatment and executive compensation also significantly influence employee engagement.
More broadly, the conference underlined how workplace factors like job quality, well-being, and a sense of meaning shape not just organisational performance, but also workers' perceptions of fairness and merit. In today’s increasingly complex economic environment, understanding these dynamics is vital for organisations aiming to address major societal and economic challenges.
