Eurekaweek 2015: Ready for take-off!

Ready for take-off! That’s the theme of Eurekaweek 2015, the introduction week for new first-year students at Erasmus University Rotterdam. From Monday 17 August until Thursday 20 August approximately 2,800 prospective students will get to know each other, the university and the city.

The theme of the fully-booked Eurekaweek 2015 – Ready for take-off – represents the start of a new phase in the lives of first-year students in a lively city, with many new friends and experiences. The Eurekaweek (Erasmus University Rotterdam First-years’ Orientation Programme) will therefore be the perfect forum to launch that new life. Over the course of four days, more than 2,800 students, including around 500 foreign students, will get to know each other, the university and the city.

Opening
One of the highlights will be the spectacular opening ceremony in De Doelen on Monday morning, 17 August, with great acts and speeches by Rector Magnificus Huibert Pols and deputy mayor Joost Eerdmans. The new students will then go to Kralingen to further explore the newly renovated Erasmus University campus.

Furthermore, the annual City & Port Tour has been revamped. This year, on Tuesday 18 August, students will go to one of the four selected areas of the city and explore it in depth. Two areas (Witte de With/Culturele As and the area around the Markthal) represent the ‘City’, the RDM wharf and the Kop van Zuid the ‘Port’. In each area an inspiring speaker from Rotterdam will be waiting to address the students.

A special student route will also be introduced on the Rotterdam Routes app. This route leads along the most interesting locations for students.

Festival
On Thursday afternoon the fully sustainable ‘Down to Earth’ festival will take place in the Museumpark, with a diversity of bands and activities. At the same time, various speakers from Rotterdam will share their success stories during ‘Eureka Speakers: Launch your Career’. One of the speakers is Harald Swinkels, co-founder of the Nederlandse Energie Maatschappij and alumnus of the Erasmus School of Economics.

Other events during the Eurekaweek will include the opening ceremony in the Maasgebouw, the Cantus, a sport’s afternoon in the Excelsior stadium, Rotterdam by Night and the closing event: Night of the Songs.
