On Wednesday morning, October 11th, enthusiastic pupils from the 8th grade of the Valentijnschool arrived at Erasmus University Rotterdam (EUR). Guided by students from the university, they eagerly entered the Theil building to participate in a lecture for kids on the workings of the human brain (Dutch title: Kindercollege hersenkraker). Samantha Breuer, a lecturer at Erasmus University College (EUC), was ready to take them on an engaging journey through the fascinating world of the brain.
Samantha began with an introduction about herself, in which she not only shared her own path to university but also enthusiastically recounted her experiences in doing research. After sharing her inspiring journey as a researcher, she led the pupils into the intriguing world of the brain. In part one of the lecture, the pupils learned about the structure and function of the brain.
Samantha's captivating storytelling style and her ability to convey complex concepts in an understandable way held the pupils in rapt attention. It was no surprise that the pupils had numerous questions, and Samantha took the time to answer them with great enthusiasm. After a short break, the lecture continued with practical examples and brief activities to illustrate the different functions of various parts of the brain. The pupils actively participated and shared their thoughts and ideas while collectively answering a set of research questions.
At the conclusion of the children's lecture, Samantha asked the pupils about their experience. One of the pupils expressed their appreciation, saying: "It was a very enjoyable lesson. I learned a lot, and you gave our class a wonderful lesson. I think you're a great teacher!" To conclude their activities at EUR, students of the university took the pupils on a tour of the EUR campus, during which the pupils could ask them all of their questions about studying at a university and student life.
After two exciting hours at the university, the pupils made their way back to the busses, filled with new knowledge about the brain and an experience that will undoubtedly continue to inspire them. The pupils had a great day, and we hope to welcome them back to EUR one day!
