The International Institue of Social Studies is proud to announce that the Best Societal Impact Award 2024 has been awarded to Beatrice Hati Gitundu for her outstanding contributions to fire safety and community resilience in Kenya’s informal settlements.

Beatrice’s research aimed to create meaningful change in communities where disaster safety decisions often exclude the voices of those most affected. Recognizing this gap, she worked closely with local groups, fire fighters and government officials to foster collaboration and improve fire safety measures.
Using innovative and participatory methods such as storytelling, theatre and fire drills, she raised awareness, built trust and strengthened relationships between communities and authorities. Her work not only enhanced fire safety preparedness but also empowered local residents to take an active role in disaster response.
Her research led to significant and lasting impact, including:
- The creation of a network of local fire safety groups, enabling communities to implement safety measures more effectively.
- The launch of Kenya’s first Community Fire Safety Week, drawing national attention to fire prevention and preparedness.
- A stronger voice for local fire fighters, ensuring their expertise is recognized in both community discussions and academic research.
The jury was highly impressed by the depth of her engagement, the practical outcomes of her research and the transformative impact she has achieved.
Congratulations, Beatrice, on this well-earned recognition!
