Conference: River Societies: Old Problems, New Solutions: A Comparative Reflection on the Rhine and the Yangtze Rivers

From 22 May until 25 May the Department of History of the Erasmus School of History, Culture and Communication hosted an international conference called: River Societies: Old Problems, New Solutions: A Comparative Reflection on the Rhine and the Yangtze Rivers. This conference concerned the historical, sociological and cultural comparison of the Rhine and Yangtze rivers and is the second in what will hopefully become a biennial conference series.

At the heart of this conference series lies the cooperation between Dutch (Rotterdam, Leiden), German (Frankfurt) and Chinese universities (Fudan University, Sun Yat-Sen University, Wuhan University, Xiamen University, Nanjing University, Nankai University, Shanghai Academy of Social Sciences), many of which are partner universities of the EUR.

On the first day, the participants were welcomed by the Education Counsellor Mr. Meng of the Chinese Embassy, our President Ms. Kristel Baele and the coordinator of the program Prof. Klemann. The next three days were packed with presentations on the following themes:

  1. Economic/business aspects
  2. Labour/Social History
  3. Cultural/religious aspects
  4. Political/juridical aspects
  5. Environmental aspects

Again, this year the conference was a success and will hopefully continue with a third conference in 2021!

The Erasmus University China Centre has played a major role in the coordination, planning and logistics of the conference.
