Erasmus University Rotterdam (EUR) advises its students who are currently in Hong Kong for study to return to the Netherlands as soon as possible due to the current situation in Hong Kong that escalated quickly in recent days. EUR will actively support the students in question with their early departure from Hong Kong.
The situation in Hong Kong worsened rapidly after the death of an activist in early November 2019. The Chinese University of Hong Kong is currently the scene of confrontations between activists and the authorities. There were also disturbances at City University Hong Kong. The travel advice to Hong Kong from the Dutch Ministry of Foreign Affairs has recently changed from "code green" to "code yellow".
How further after return?
At the start of this semester, 74 students from Erasmus University Rotterdam studied in Hong Kong. A small number of students is already back in the Netherlands. Those who are currently staying in Hong Kong must arrange their own return flight. Students who are not reimbursed for the costs incurred for a return flight by their travel insurance can get their travel expenses reimbursed the by the Education and Student Affairs department of Erasmus University. After returning in the Netherlands, the appropriate faculty will examine together with their students what to do with possible study delays. EUR believes that student safety is top priority at this stage.
