Arjen Schep (1974) is appointed Endowed Professor Taxes of Sub Central Governments at Erasmus School of Law. Prof. Schep also succeeds Prof. Jan Monsma as scientific director of the Erasmus Study Center for Taxes of Sub Central Governments (ESBL). The chair is made possible by the J.H. Christiaanse Foundation.
He is a real "Rotterdam" tax law specialist: after his studies at Erasmus School of Law, he continued working here as a researcher and completed his PhD at Erasmus University Rotterdam. Prof. Schep conducts research on the taxes of local authorities and the valuation of real estate, both within and outside the Netherlands. In the coming period his research, and that of the ESBL mainly focuses on three topics: Property Tax as a means for Domestic Resource Mobilization in developing countries, Local Taxes & Sustainability and Municipal Instruments for Funding of Area Transformation. He also works within the department of Tax Law, where he brings students in contact with his field of research.
In addition to his work for the ESBL, Prof. Schep participates in several national committees and working groups, he spends part of his time working for the tax department of the municipality of Amsterdam and he continues his work as a deputy judge at the Rotterdam District Court. This way he combines theory and practice.
