Annelien Bredenoord, Rector Magnificus of Erasmus University Rotterdam, brings social sciences and humanities expertise to High-Level Expert Group shaping the future of Horizon Europe

Professor Annelien Bredenoord, Rector Magnificus of Erasmus University Rotterdam, has been appointed as a member of the High-Level Expert Group for the Interim Evaluation of Horizon Europe, the European Union's flagship research and innovation program.

The group, officially launched on December 5 in Brussels, will play a pivotal role in advising the European Commission on the future of Horizon Europe and formulating a vision for the next research and innovation program.

Stimulating science in Europe

Chaired by Manuel Heitor, Professor at Instituto Superior Técnico, University of Lisbon, the expert group comprises distinguished professionals from various fields across the European Union.

Prof. Bredenoord, a leading figure in the ethical assessment of biomedical technology, and the sole representative with a background in social sciences and humanities, joins a diverse panel of experts committed to providing valuable insights into the state of Research & Innovation (R&I) in the EU.

Bredenoord: ''Innovation needed for all societal challenges''

In her role as a member of the High-Level Expert Group, Prof. Bredenoord will actively contribute to shaping the future of Horizon Europe, fostering impactful research and innovation, securing funding, supporting basic research, and navigating the challenges and expectations set by policymakers and the broader European community. 

Reflecting on her appointment, Prof. Bredenoord expressed her enthusiasm and commitment to the task at hand, stating, "science and innovation are needed more than ever to tackle the big societal challenges and the green, digital, socio-economic, and demographic transitions that we face. I am happy and honored to contribute to this European endeavor."

Monthly consultations

The High-Level Expert Group, which will convene monthly from January to October 2024, aims to produce a comprehensive report outlining strategic advice and concrete suggestions on how Horizon Europe can remain flexible, attractive to researchers and innovators, and effectively respond to evolving needs.
