Also in 2023, almost 100% of EUR publications are open access

In 2023, 83% of the academic publications from authors at Erasmus University Rotterdam (EUR) and Erasmus MC (EMC) were publicly available. EUR (excl. EMC) reached 98%. What’s next for open access publishing at the EUR?

Every year, the University Library measures how many academic, peer-reviewed journal articles published by researchers from Erasmus University and Erasmus MC (EMC) are available open access. In 2023, the open access share was 83%. This is a slight decrease of 1% from 2022.

Open Access at EUR and EMC 2023

No more growth?

The similar numbers of 2022 and 2023 are due to the already maximum capacity reached by the open access workflows at the EUR Woudestein faculties (98% in both years at EUR excl. EMC) and the still-in-progress implementation of an Open Access Regulation (OAR) at EMC. In 2024 or 2025, when the EMC will also adopt the OAR, we expect numbers to grow tremendously.

What’s next for open access at the University library?

The University Library is strengthening the Green open access numbers of EUR by making older EUR-publications publicly available under the Open Access Regulation as well. Thanks to this ongoing project, all closed publications from EUR authors published between 2015 and 2020 will be opened up on our institutional repository. Authors can opt-out for specific publications via MyEUR

Besides expanding our Green open access workflows to the EMC and to past publications, the University Library is looking to broaden the open access publishing support beyond the  successful Hybrid and Green open access routes and explore alternative strategies that allow for a more diverse and sustainable publishing culture. Moving forward, we aim to strengthen Diamond open access publishing at EUR via our Diamond Open Access Fund and our leading role in the national Diamond open access project in our endeavour to create a future-proof open access landscape. Moreover, we are also helping researchers getting their books published open access via our Open Access Book Fund.
