Study association AEclipse welcomes Nobel Prize winner Guido Imbens

On Thursday 30 June Guido Imbens, laureate of the 2021 Nobel Sveriges Riksbank Prize in Economic Sciences and alumnus of Erasmus School of Economics, will visit his alma mater at the invitation of the Rotterdam based study association AEclipse. Imbens, Professor of Applied Econometrics and Professor of Economics at Stanford Graduate School of Business, is one of the world's foremost econometricians.

Winner of the Nobel Prize in Economics

In 2021, Guido Imbens, along with David Card (University of California) and Joshua Angrist (Massachusetts Institute of Technology), was presented the Nobel Prize in Economic Sciences. He received the prize for his methodological contributions to the analysis of causal relationships. Imbens, who was appointed as foreign member to the Royal Netherlands Academy of Arts and Sciences (KNAW) in 2017, was born in Eindhoven and studied econometrics at Erasmus School of Economics. He then continued his career in the United States. Imbens is the third Dutch winner of the Nobel Prize in Economic Sciences. Jan Tinbergen was the first to win this prize in 1969 along with the Norwegian Ragnar Frisch. In 1975, Tjalling Koopmans shared it with the Russian Leonid Kantorovitsj.

Effect of policy on the economy

Guido Imbens has conducted influential work to help address the limitations of real-world experiments of social scientists, greatly improving researchers’ ability to assess the effects of interventions from both field and experimental data. His work is used to analyse complicated research questions such as the effectiveness of a new drug on a patient or the impacts of new regulation on economic activity. Imbens has also researched artificial intelligence and machine learning, collaborating with researchers from Facebook and Amazon.

Registration to attend guest lecture

On Thursday 30 June from 15:00 to 17.30, lecture room CB-01 in the Theil building will be the setting for Guido Imbens' lecture and the subsequent interactive session.

Everyone is welcome to attend this event. We request you to register via the event page.
