In 2015, the Erasmus Prize will be awarded to Wikipedia for promoting the dissemination of knowledge through its comprehensive and universally accessible encyclopaedia. To mark this occasion, the Royal Netherlands Academy of Arts and Sciences is organising a symposium that will address such questions as: Can Wikipedia meet the encyclopaedic urge?
Why is it that material produced by public broadcasting organisations with public funding cannot be used by the public to illustrate and enrich Wikipedia articles? And how can Wikipedia be used as a cultural reference work as well as controversy machine – a question that highlights the larger issue of its role in social research?
When: 23 November 2015 from 10:00 to 17:00 hrs
Where: Trippenhuis Building, Kloveniersburgwal 29, 1011 JV Amsterdam
