On Wednesday, March 19, a festive symposium took place in the Senate Hall and the Erasmus Gallery. We bid farewell to dr. Herman Gerritsen, curator of the Nederlands Economisch Penningkabinet (NEPK), the medal collection of Erasmus University Rotterdam (EUR). For over 18 years, he volunteered his time for the NEPK.

This collection is part of EUR's academic heritage and is managed by the University Library (UL). In honour of his significant contribution to this collection, Gerritsen received the prestigious Erasmus Medal from the municipality, presented by councillor Said Kasmi (Education, Culture, and Events). EUR honoured him with its own Centenary Medal.
Since his appointment in 2007, Gerritsen significantly increased the visibility of the NEPK. He gave tours and lectures, curated exhibitions, and created interactive touchscreen display cases in the Erasmus Gallery. He was also responsible for digitizing the collection, making it accessible online. Thanks to his efforts, the collection grew to over 2,800 medals. It is a unique thematic collection, with all medals related to the economy and business.
In addition to bidding farewell to dr. Gerritsen, we also celebrated the successful migration of the NEPK collection to the library’s website. We started the project in October 2024. This included migrating the metadata of the over 2,800 medals and setting up a new webpage within the library website. Thanks to this project, the collection is now fully integrated into CONTENTdm. This is the database where we store all of EUR's academic heritage collections, thus ensuring the continuity of the medal collection. Take a look at the new database of the medal collection yourself.
