The 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development, adopted by all United Nations Member States in 2015, provides a shared blueprint for peace and prosperity for people and the planet, now and into the future. At its heart are the 17 Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), which are an urgent call for action by all countries - developed and developing - in a global partnership.
As a Library, we contribute to the following objectives:
Target 4.4
By 2030, substantially increase the number of youth and adults who have relevant skills, including technical and vocational skills, for employment, decent jobs and entrepreneurship.
What we do:
- Academic skills training (also free available online for non-EUR students).
Target 4.A
Build and upgrade education facilities that are child, disability and gender sensitive and provide safe, nonviolent, inclusive and effective learning environments for all.
What we do:
- Our on site services are accessible for everybody, also for non-EUR students and employees. We offer tailor-made facilities for visitors with an impairment.

Target 8.5
By 2030, achieve full and productive employment and decent work for all women and men, including for young people and persons with disabilities, and equal pay for work of equal value.
What we do:
- In line with our goal of being a university characterized by diversity and inclusiveness, EUR provides opportunities for people with a functional impairment and therefore wants to fulfil the requirements of the job agreement (in Dutch: Banenafspraak).
Target 9.5
Enhance scientific research, upgrade the technological capabilities of industrial sectors in all countries, in particular developing countries, including, by 2030, encouraging innovation and substantially increasing the number of research and development workers per 1 million people and public and private research and development spending.
What we do:
- Erasmus University has been an active supporter of open access since the early days. We believe that research should be transparent and accessible. The Library offers various ways to make research available Open Access, so that there is a suitable solution for every situation.
- FAIR data is a crucial element in making science more open. The Library manages the EUR Data Repository. This is an online platform where researchers deposit their dataset to showcase their research and make it findable, citable, and reusable for others

Target 10.2:
By 2030, empower and promote the social, economic and political inclusion of all, irrespective of age, sex, disability, race, ethnicity, origin, religion or economic or other status.
What we do:
- We hire people because of the talent they bring to the library. The application procedure is anonymized, to offer equal opportunities irrespective of age, sex, disability, race, ethnicity, origin, or other status.
Target 11.4:
Strengthen efforts to protect and safeguard the world’s cultural and natural heritage.
What we do:
- Founded in 1859 to provide the residents of Rotterdam with a high-quality library and reading room, the Leeskabinet has become a heritage library with a collection of around 250,000 volumes. Its members contribute to the preservation of this cultural heritage in Rotterdam. The University Library closely cooperates with this unique reading society.
- The history of Erasmus University Rotterdam dates from 1913. More than one hundred years of academic practice and institutional history is recorded in many photographs, objects and documents. We consider all these collections as our academic heritage. We provide access to these rich materials and we take part in networks to safeguard heritage collections.

Target 17.6
Enhance North-South, South-South and triangular regional and international cooperation on and access to science, technology and innovation and enhance knowledge sharing on mutually agreed terms, including through improved coordination among existing mechanisms, in particular at the United Nations level, and through a global technology facilitation mechanism.
