Intra-abdominal hypertension (IAH) and abdominal compartment syndrome (ACS) are conditions of increased intra-abdominal pressure seen in severely injured or ill patients. Along with modern restricted fluid resuscitation, the prevalence of these conditions decreased significantly. If abdominal compartment syndrome still emerges, it’s crucial to recognize it quickly. Unrecognized it will inevitably result in death. When recognized, it remains challenging to treat it adequately. The studies described in this thesis aimed to determine current practices, prevalence and mortality of intra-abdominal hypertension and abdominal compartment syndrome and to identify markers for early and accurate recognition.
Due to corona, the PhD defences do not take place publicly in the usual way in the Senate Hall of the Professor Andries Querido Room. The candidates will defend their dissertation either in a small group or online.
