Below is a brief summary of the dissertation:

Biliary cancer is associated with a poor prognosis. Most patients are only eligible for palliative systemic treatment with a median overall survival of 12 months. In patients with jaundice the prognosis is even worse with a median overall survival of 6 months, due to complications of endoscopic biliary drainage. During my PhD research period, we started new locoregional treatments for patients with inoperable biliary cancer to improve survival and quality of life.

In the PUMP II trial patients with unresectable intrahepatic cholangiocarcinoma received hepatic arterial infusion pump chemotherapy combined with standard systemic chemotherapy. In the TESLA trial, patients with jaundice due to a malignant hilar biliary obstruction underwent primary percutaneous stenting without passing the ampulla and without leaving an external biliary drain.
