Below is a brief summary of the dissertation:
Microbubbles have a greater potential than their current usage as blood pool imaging agents. Envisioned future microbubble use cases include therapy and minimally-invasive blood pressure sensing. To realize these new directions for microbubbles, it is crucial to control their vibrational response to ultrasound. This vibrational response largely depends on the size of microbubbles, which can be controlled by producing them via microfluidic flow-focusing, but the vibrational response also depends on their mechanical shell parameters. This thesis is focused on characterizing the shell properties of single microbubbles, with a particular focus on realizing their potential as minimally-invasive blood pressure sensor. Firstly we are interested in understanding the (variance in) acoustical response of monodisperse microbubbles. Secondly we are interested how microbubbles can be used to sense ambient pressure through subharmonics oscillations.
