Below is a brief summary of the dissertation:
The current dissertation studied the role of parental autonomy support in adolescence. We aimed to examine whether autonomy support is predicting, or predicted by, problem behaviors over time. In addition, we investigated how, under what conditions, and according to whose perspective, parental autonomy support is associated with parent and child problem behaviors and characteristics. To this end, we studied (1) within-family dynamics in autonomy support across time, (2) the differential role of fathers’ and mothers’ autonomy support, (3) differences between parents and children in their perspectives on autonomy support, (4) differences between siblings in terms of received autonomy support, and (5) autonomy support as a parenting context in which other parenting practices are expressed.
