This thesis covers several topics with regard to incisional hernias. An incisional hernia is a bulging through the abdominal wall underneath a previous surgical scar. The loss of muscle mass has been researched as a risk factor, preoperative patient preparation through Botox injections in the abdominal wall and a type of "ballooning" effect with air has been researched; and results of a new type of mesh to reinforce the abdominal wall are presented.

Due to corona, the PhD defences do not take place publicly in the usual way in the Senate Hall or in the Professor Andries Querido Room. The candidates will defend their dissertation either in a small group or online.
