Brief summary:
The PhD thesis investigates performance of environmental management in the North Atlantic Treaty Organization. It has been designed to answer two questions: What is the state of environmental management across three pillars of human resource management, organizational direction and strategy, and management and leadership commitment. This has been conducted through a mixed-methods empirical research approach. Once the "what" was answered, the next stage was designed to answer the "why" to performance of environmental management in NATO. This was completed through the application of Principal-Agent theory. Both questions were answered in the research, concluding with the determination that NATO environmental performance shows weaknesses across the three pillars, with a causal influence of the actions and inactions of the Principal and agent.
