Dissertation in short:
The Netherlands Ministry of Defence has adopted open innovation in its Strategic Knowledge and Innovation Agenda (2016, 2021) and Innovation Strategy (2018). This challenging transition entails the innovation of management in the military and comprises the empirical context of this dissertation. But how do these processes evolve in traditional, bureaucratic organizations such as the military and what are the consequences for innovation performance?
This dissertation contributes to a better understanding of management innovation processes and innovation performance consequences at the organizational level, in less researched bureaucratic organizations in the public sector. This dissertation therewith challenges the theoretical frameworks on which management innovation studies are based. I provide theoretical and practical solutions for the paradox between the institutional pressure to adopt new management practices, the rational motivation to increase innovation performance and the challenges of an implementation misfit between open innovation and bureaucratic organizations.
